Steering Clearance

I'm putting my 61 together and after shimming the steering assembly outboard 1/4" I've only got 1/16 clearance between the steering sector shaft and the spark plug boot for #1 cylinder. The car has a 283 with stock mounts. Any advice will be greatly apperciated.

I am not near my car and can't go look, but that doesn't sound right at all. Are the rubber motor mounts installed? It sounds like the motor is way too low.

It has the stock mounts installed per the assembly manual.

I have about 1/4" clearance between the boot and the installed steering arm. If you have the stock spark plug wires with the 90 deg. head it should be okay. The clearance I'm talking about is directly forward of the plug head to the pitman arm.
