    Question on 69 owner's manual

I have this mint 69 owner's manual that came with a car I bought. I don't know whether it is orginal. It is a second edition dated Dec. 1968 Part #3955551,also the bag it is in is dated 3-19-68. Are these a repro or orginal's. Thanks john

There are generally intentional differences between original GB literature and reproduction items. Typically, the pictures in repro owner's manuals are poorer than originals (second generation copy--fuzzy). 'Almost' always you'll find a small acknowledgement disclaimer somewhere in the repro book along the lines, "Reprinted with the permission of General Motors."

        john-----

The original, PRODUCTION-delivered owners manuals for 1969 had a card in them for use by the owner to obtain a "Corvette Owner ID Card" and subscription to Corvette News. The card, or, at least, the stub of the card (which is about 1/2 page in size and of much thicker card stock than the rest of the pages of the manual) should still be present if the manual is an original manual delivered with a car.

Of course, if it doesn't have this feature, it could still be an original GM SERVICE replacement manual. So, there are actually 4 different levels of manuals available:

        1) ORIGINALS, as delivered with a car

        2) GM SERVICE replacement originals

        3) High Quality reproductions which are usually GM-authorized and produced from original source material. These are difficult to distinguish from the originals except by the "authorized by GM" script that Jack mentioned.

        4) Low quality reproductions which are produced from, essentially, copies of the originals. These have "fuzzy", low-definition pictures and artwork.

Helm, Inc. printed the GM service replacement manuals. In many of the years the service replacements came with the Corvette News tear out cards, so the presence of a Corvette News card does not mean it is definately an original manual. It is sometimes difficult to tell an original from a service replacement, however as was previously mentioned the photo quality in the "repros"(as opposed to service replacement or reissue as I call them) is poor. Often the presence of "aged white paper" or the smell of aged paper helps to validate an original.
