I have a '70 LS5 coupe that is long past being "all original". I would like to make it a street version of the '68 to '72 SCCA GT class roadracing 'Vette's like the Owens-Corning and Greenwood cars.
This spring I will begin a complete restoration (I need to go all the way to separating the body from the frame bue to extreme rust). The door and windshield frames are also rusted badly. The interior should be replaced completely but I'll save as much as I can. I can't afford 4 grand for just the interior.
When I'm putting things back together I'll make some mods. like a Guldstrand 4 link rear suspension (my car has a bad "jacking " problem when driven hard in corners) and possible plastic springs front and rear. Maybe even tubular front A arms to cut down on weight.
This being a street car the engine will need to be on the mild side. I think a mild hydraulic roller cam will do if I can afford it. Aluminum heads, intake manifold and water pump just to take some weight off the front end. Even though I am a big man (300 lb. ex weightlifter) I have torn rotator cuff muscles in both shoulders from my work. P225 70's with an all iron big block sitting on them is about all I can turn. And I ain't getting any younger.
Now that you know something about what I plan to do, I have 2 questions (I bet you thought I'd never get to it didn't you?).
1) Does anyone know where I could get the frame chemicaly cleaned or dipped (acid cleaning). By the way I live in North Bend, Ohio about 16 miles west of Cincinnati. I would like some place local so I don't have to ship the frame. Also any of you Cincinnati guys/gals know of any good shops that can patch frames (cause man it's going to need it).
2) Does anyone know where I could get the headlight kits that were on the old racing Corvette's back in the late '60's early '70's? I looked thruogh the archives and found a post by Jerry Bramlett on 4/3/99. He called them "frogeyes" and said they were part of the "distance kit" put out by Chevrolet back then for racers. If anyone has the book "Corvette America's Star-Spangled Sports Car" there is a good picture of them on page 225. It's the car in the upper right corner. By the way, the car on the front of this book is what I'm trying to do (I beleive it is one of Greenwood's cars) but without the loud paint. Nine will be the original color (974).
Thank you.
