    '65 Exhaust Manifold parts

I have a couple questions about the exhaust manifolds. I planned to remove the manifolds to refinish them and replace the studs to the exhaust pipes. I wanted to order all the necessary parts before I removed them to do the work. While looking in the catalogs I have a couple questions.

    My manifolds are for a 327 w/ 2 1/2" exhaust.

What exactly are the french locks for/what do they do.? Should I be able to reuse the donut between the manifold and pipe? or should I purchase a new one.?
I will have to purchase a new heat riser.

The list of parts I think i need include:
    manifold bolts, to engine
    washers for bolts
    french locks
studs and nuts, from manifold to exhaust pipe. Should I use SS of Brass?
    Heat Riser
    gasket
    donut

I think that was all, I don't have my list with me.
Is there anything I'm missing, should I be able to reuse anything?

I looked in my AIM but there is no clear picture showing an up close exploded view.

    Thanks for any help

The french locks are designed to prevent the exhaust manifold bolts from backing out. Of course, the ears have to be bent over for them to accomplish this function.

You should NOT re-use the donut gasket (packing) under ANY circumstances. The chances are that yours will be a a composition and/or asbestos type piece. These should NEVER be re-used. If yours is a sintered metal type (unlikely), it could theoretically, be re-used, but I would not. The sintered metal type is the best, but they are hard to find for 2-1/2" systems.

    Other parts:

    heat riser valve assembly----GM #3887034

    bolts------------------------GM #3836646 (1-5/8" outer holes--8 required)

    -----------------------------GM #3733134 (2-27/32" inner holes--4 required)

special flat washers for manifold bolts----reproduction sources; re-use if you have them

    gasket (triangular shaped)---GM #10159498

    packing (donut)--------------GM #15634536 (composition material)

french locks-----------------GM #12338135 (4 required) plain carbon steel; aftermarket stainless steel are better but NOT "correct"

nuts-------------------------use LONG BRASS nuts; available at auto parts stores

studs------------------------use STAINLESS STEEL IF, and it's a BIG IF, you can get your old ones out. Stainless is NOT correct, but I don't think that anyone will know the difference. The "magnet test" won't work on these since they thread into strongly magnetic material
