    cross-fire tuning 1982 Collector

1982 Collector Edition, 32,000 easy miles. At idle with the hood open and ear to the engine, I'm hearing a very slight 'tapping-like' sound. Almost sounds like a faint valve clasp. Am I mis-diagnosing or is the problem really in the vacuum system or in the throttle bodies somewhere?. I've never had the cross-fire system properly tuned. But have had the car routine-tuned at a local dealer. What dealer's or garages (anywhere) offer this service? I think I read an article about a tuner in the New Jersey area.

Is it the gas? I seem to hear this noise elevated louder under hard acceleration? Is 87 octane enough? I have swapped a performance chip upgrade for the stock unit. Am i having compatibility problems???

Ricky, My 82 has 24k miles and I haven't heard that noise. But I use the 92 octane stuff. That seems like an easy thing to try first. As to that chip, I've got one, but still in the plastic. I'm a little unsure if I want to put it in. "If it runs good, don't fix it!" Did you notice any performance improvement????

I dont think you would hear any pinging at idle or without much load. The injectors themselves are pretty loud on those engines.

Rich, I've tried higher octane, and it seems to make a difference, but the book does call for 87 (I think-check me on that). Yes, the chip makes a WORLD of difference in shift points across most of the tach range and incredibly improves driveability. If you're doing any traveling in hilly terrain, I'd recommend one. Suggested to me by a group of fellow Collector Edition owner's I met at Carlisle one year. I'm sure if you'd try one you'd never revert back to the OEM chip.

Ricky, Thanks for the input. Soon as it gets out of storage, and the tires get put on, I'll give it a try.
