    "Hot Coil??"

I am about ready to start the new motor in the '56 but have a question. I have installed a Pertronics elec. ign. in the dist., do I really need the "Hot" coil or will my recently new GM replacement coil do?

    Re: "Hot Coil??"

Your existing coil will work fine with the Pertronix unit.

        Re: "Hot Coil??"

I think the Pertronics and similar ignition points replacement gizmos are probably the most misunderstood devices in the industry in terms of what they can and cannot do.

The basic aftermarket unit that fits inside the distributor simply provides a different method of stopping and starting the flow of electrons to the primary side of the coil.

The standard GM points are a simple mechanical switch. The Pertronics unit is a simple electronic switch. Nothing more, nothing less. The final output of the coil (induced on the secondary winding by the collapse of the primary field) is not altered in any way by the presence of the Pertronics unit. The coil doesn't know that the mechanical points have been replaced by an electronic set.

I'm sure that some day somebody will sell high performance electronic wall switches for home use, but I don't expect my 60 watt bulbs to illuminate any faster or burn any brighter.

To answer you question, your standard coil will work the same as it did with the original points and there is no need to switch to anything else.

I think Terry mentioned that there is an article coming out soon on this topic, hopefully I won't have any more egg on my face than usual.

Maybe I'll go into the business of making electronic relays to replace the vacuum relays on Shark headlights and convince everybody that I've solved all their problems.
