    Re: rear end

Before you put in 3.08's you might want to either drive a car with them or ask someone else if they like them. They are great for highway cruising, but are really slow when accelerating from a stop. Personally, I prefer 3.36 as a great, all around gear.

        Re: rear end

I drove a 71 with an LS5/3.08 for several years. It was my sole means of transportation. It had all the low end torque I could ever use on the street. On the drag strip, it was very competitive. I realize the LS4 has a little less punch, but 3.08's should still be plenty of low end for most legal activities. If you plan to race or autocross, you might want to go a little higher numerically. As mentioned, if you can find someone with the combo you plan to use and get a test drive, that would be the best approach, but locating that exact combo near you may be a problem.

            Re: rear end

While there is no doubt that a big block will make up for a lot of gearing problems, I was thinking more along the lines of a nice compromise all the way around. If you were happy with 3.08's, would 3.36's have been better? My neighbor has a 454 with 3.36's and it is a hoot to drive. Lots of torque coming from a stoplight and it keeps the rpms down on the road.

As I said, just a good all around compromise but then again, that was my opinion, and I certainly don't have the wealth of experience that many others do.

Like we both said- the best approach would be to bum a test drive. Only problem is finding one.

Come to Pittsburgh and I will talk my buddy into letting you light up the tires on his 73 454!

Well, if you can talk him into bringing it to Philadelphia, I'll be sitting here in a hotel room all weekend with nothing else to do.
