I removed the dash pads from the dash housing by turning the retainers 1/4 turn. Disassembly was uneventful. All retainer clips look OK, but I wonder if they are meant to be reused, as they must be re-spread upon reassembly. I believe that they were removed and reused at least one additional time in the past. How many times can they be reused before they fail. They are expensive at approx. $3.00 each, and 26 are needed.
Next, I wiped the dash pads with lacquer thinner to prep prior to dying. One pad remained supple, but the other one became brittle and cracked--don't know why one was affected and not the other. Anyway, I will now replace the pads with a new matched pair. The question is, are there any discernable differences between an original, and an Al Knoch reproduction. Paragon has some very expensive originals, but I wonder if they are worth the money, also, why buy old pads which are likely dried out from age.
Thanks in advance.
