    Midyear PM Front End Question....

I have a '67 with the old front end off, and the rest of the body is still on the frame. The car is on jackstands in the front, with the tires off. The rebuilt front suspension has been recently installed.

I just bought a correct, jig assembled, press molded, complete front end, complete with inner skirts, which is ready to bond on. I have done one "trial" attempt to slide the new front end onto the firewall, but the bottom of the skirts seem to be hanging up, going over the upper A-arms.

I don't want to do any damage or split the surround seams on the glass, by forcing it over the A-arms.

Has anyone been in this situation before and what should I expect? I have installed a couple of front ends, but not with the skirts attached.

    Thanks, Patrick

Patrick, are you trying to "slide" it on from front to back, or are you "lowering" it down and then sliding it onto the cowling while slightly spreading the lower fenders apart? This is a job that takes more than one person. It would probably help if you had at least three people. The skirts should not get hung up on the a-arms because they have that huge cut-out where the flaps are attached, unless you are trying to slide it from front to back. You are going to have to lower it down at an oblique angle toward the cowling. That should get you going.

Thanks Brandon, I just did a second try with it, had one helper. We tilted the front up high as we could, and it looks like it will slide on that way. The problem is, two people can't tilt it up high for very long.

My plan is to get 2 helpers, (wife and daughter) to hold either side and I will hold the front, with all the weight, and since I'm tall, can hold it up high enough to clear the A-arms. They will have a lot less weight to hold and can guide it on without damaging anything. Patrick

Sounds like a plan. The whole front end doesnt weigh all that much, but it is very awkward. I thought of something else... You dont have the core support mounted while you are trying to lower the fiberglass on are you? You need to leave that out until you get the glass situated, and then while either having a person on each end holding it up, or using saw horses or chairs to support the front by each wheel well, then you can slide the support in from the top, bolt it to the front horns, and then bolt the inner fenders to the support. Of course you could bolt the support to the fiberglass first, but that makes it very front-heavy and more awkward.
