72 AIM questions - speedo gear & gas tank

Good morning to all. In the 72 AIM, on page M268 (electrical) there is a description of how the speedometer cable goes into the transmission tail shaft. Item 9 says "Gear Chart". Other than relying on those of you with old GM parts manuals, is this chart listed anywhere? I can see what I believe to be is a red or perhaps pink gear sticking out. Secondly, item 5 is a fitting that the cable screws into, or the 90 degree adapter for those of us with 4.11's. Once the cable is off and the 7/16" nut holding the retainer is off, how does this fitting come out? Pull out, unscrew?

Last question(s). On page M214, under fuel, the AIM shows a "separator", item 1. Can one surmise that this is a fuel vapor separator since this is fed via a fuel vapor return line? What is it separating? Condensing fuel vapor back into liquid form? What is the second hose coming out below it, labeled item 5?

Sorry for the nit picking questions. I am just looking at things on the car and trying to do a little troubleshooting.

    Gary------

The speedometer gear fitting will pull out after the retainer and bolt are removed. However, it's a little difficult to pull it out since it is sealed by an o-ring. I recommend removing the retainer/bolt before removing the cable nut (or adapter). Then, use the cable nut (or adapter) to give you a good hand-hold to pull out the fitting.

The seperator which you describe prevents any liquid fuel in the tank from entering the line to the vapor cannister. And, by the way, you don't want to need one of these seperators which are made of plastic and are a life-limited component. They're long-since GM-discontinued, not reproduced, and not available in the aftermarket.

Joe, good advice on removal of the speedometer gear. In my post on March 10th concerning the 90 degree adapter, you mentioned a parts book page number and references for adapters. Am I to assume that the ONLY place for the platic gears and adapters, and their usage, is in the parts book? I have looked high and low and it seems the only guys who pipe up about speedometer gears are those with parts books.

            Gary-----

Certainly, info regarding speedometer gear-related parts can be found in parts manuals. However, it seems to me that there is a chart in one of the early-70s Corvette AIMs. I don't recall which year, though. I don't think that it's in all of them.

There's an excellent chart in the '73 AIM, but I'm not sure if the driving gear on the tailshaft is the same on all pre-73s.

That's just my luck; I have a 66, 71. and 72 AIM but perhaps my neighbor has one for his 73.
