Re: '57, 270 Intake manifold bolts
Rex,
The correct answer is no washers of any type. However, I couldn't stand the damage that the bolts do to the aluminum manifold on my 56, so I used a small outer diameter stainless steel washer to protect the manifold. Although they are almost invisible, I suspect that they would get a judging deduction.- Top

"small outer diameter stainless steel washer"
They're called "AN" washers. I believe the yare used in the aircraft industry. A regular washer, while having the same hole size, has a much larger outside ring. These AN washers almost hide under the hear of the bolt.
These washers are also sold at all the usual "hot rod" places for this purpose.- Top

Chris----
Yes, the "AN" washers (and other fastners so-labeled) are, indeed, of aircraft origin. The "AN" designation is an old military spec designation which is still used today. "AN" is an acronym for "Army-Navy".
In my opinion, these washers are a "must-have" for use under small block intake manifold bolts, whether the manifold is aluminum OR cast iron. Some things are just worth the "point deduction".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
