I hope some member(s) can help me on this one. I have found "NOTE a torque of xx LBS FT. maximum is permissible on nut after insertion of the cotter pin." referenced many times in the assembly instruction manuals for my 1966 and 1974 cars, primarily for suspension assemblies. How does one torque a nut that has a cotter pin in it? The only way that I have to torque a nut/bolt is to use a socket and torque wrench, but the socket will not fit over a (castle) nut that has a cotter pin through it. Thanks in advance.

Re: AIM Question
Dan and Paul-----
Paul is correct, but to explain a little further, the purpose of the "maximuum permisable" statement is that after applying the specified torque to the fastner and, if necessary additional torque to allow insertion of the cotter pin, there should not be applied a torque which exceeds the maximuum permisable. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
