    Spring Info

I'm in the process of restoring the front springs and rear leaf spring in my 68 BB. Is it OKay to reuse the old springs? Also, I was told that sandblasting the springs will weaken them. Is this true?

    Thanks.........

As long as there is not a significant amount of material loss due to corrosion they are likely okay to use. You can measure the free length and the wire diameter along the spring and compare to specifications. In general, serious corrosion of the rear leaves will be plainly visible.

Sandblasting will not weaken the springs, however, it may change the surface texture, which could be an issue if you are going for Flight awards.

It would be best to protect the springs with a good rust preventative primer and paint if you are willing to sacrifice the points.

        Duke, Thanks for the info.

I plan on painting the springs anyway. There is some surface rust however I don't think it will affect the ride. I believe the front springs normally are painted semi-black and the rear looks like all the leaves are completey painted with a gray primer.
