I have a 1972 corvette that i was told that if you put the outer tie rod in the inner hole in the spindle it will turn better. The tie rod in the outer hole on the spindle is how it is supposed to be from the factory. I have manual steerring and drive the car about once or twice a week on sunny day. I just drive it regular I do not race it. Will this help it steer tighter or is it just for racing?

Re: 72 Tie rod adjustment ,Inner outer hole on spi
The inner tie rod hole is an "optional" setting for manual steering cars. It will quicken the overall ratio ( 20.2 to about 17:1 as I recall), but the effort will be commensurately higher. Personally I prefer the quick setting.
You can reset it by removing the tie rod with a puller or giving the steering arm a sharp blow along its axis with a big hammer after removing the cotter pin and nut.. After installing on the inner hole you MUST adjust the toe-in.

Re: 72 Tie rod adjustment ,Inner outer hole on spi
Moving the tie-rod location changes the overall steering ratio. Power steering cars use the inner hole by default. Manual steering cars come from the factory with the link in the outer hole, but you can quicken the steering ratio by moving the link to the inner hole. When you move the link, you are also reducing leverage so you will have to put a little more muscle into turning the wheel. This change does not make the car handle any better, it just gives you fewer turns lock-to-lock.- Top
