Well guys, three machinists later and a yet another set of gaskets, the DS head looks to be coming off again.....
Miked the lifter bore.... OK, Cleared lifter oil galley on either side, NO PROBLEM and good oil flow, Checked cam lift with dial indicator on intake and exhaust, OK.... Popped exhaust and intake springs off, NOT BINDING OR BROKEN... Exhaust and Intakes rotated freely.... Rechecked parallel of stud to boss... OK. All machinists looked at each other, scratched our heads, and said hmmmmm, looks good to us and nobody could figure out how that lifter came apart while still leaving the retaining clip in place. We just figured it was a defective part, replaced it, and put it back together.
Reassembled and fired.... pushrods spinning nicely and the offending lifter that started this mess seems to be fine. Still runs like pooky at idle. I will say though, if I straighten this mess out, she will run wonderfully. I did take it out for a minor spin around the block, and OH THE POWER even with the miss. Don't worry guys, I didn't get crazy, just a little run to make sure :-)
Duke was right on with that L82 cam and for the first time in 2 years, I could time the car to spec without it coughing and complaining! Also noticed I had to crank the #5 exhaust down way more than any of the others to get it adjusted and the clacking out.
Ratza fratza.... I gave up last night around 8 and had a settling beer (actually a couple). I should have done a compression test in advance of reassembly, but you know how it goes.... looked good, nothing obvious, so I prayed to the Corvette God, took a chance, reassembled and wanted that car running. Goes to show you, never hurry, leave anything to chance, and test Murphy's Law on a Corvette. It has been my experience he always wins on my 73..... Shoulda, woulda, coulda.....
Today will pop out the plugs and do a compression test on numbers 1,3,5 and 7........ Any wajers on what I will find? Voting begins now....
