    65 327-350 HP Camshaft Question...

    Technical Question..

65 350HP engine - Presently set up with a Lazer Cam installed. Lazer Cams is a division of Campower Inc. out of Memphis, TN. Have a cut sheet on the specific cam and it reads as follows:

    Engine Chevy 262-400 V8
    Grind----2700116

    Duration: Intake Exhaust

    adv. @ .006 270 275
    @ .050 T.L. 220 225
    Lobe Lift .310 .307
    Gross Lift .465 .460
    Valve Lash .000 .000

    Lobe Center Separation 108
Install Cam at Intake Lobe Centerline of 104

Would appreciate it if someone could tell me how this cam profile stacks up against the original cam that came in an L-79. Is this a good cam, bad cam, average cam, not wurfa, etc. Would like to determine if this is a radical change/departure from the original cam that came in the car.

If it's a "not wurfa" it's not gonna impact anything, just interested in why this particular cam might have been chosen over original. Compression Ratio is also lowered to 10.5-1 with hardened valve seats.

    Thanks,

    Rick #13174

Re: 65 327-350 HP Camshaft Question...

The 3863151 is an excellent all around street high performance cam.

Basic specs are 221/221 duration at .050" lifter rise maximum lift points are 110ATC/118BTC for a 114 degree angle and gross lift is .447"/.447". It has fairly soft action so it's easy on the valve train and will work fine on heads with pressed in rocker studs.

IMO the cam you are running has too much overlap, which tends to kill the torque curve at the low end.

I have used the 327/350 camshaft...

In everything from 'Vettes to offshore powerboats, and I would say it's my all-around favorite Chevy cam. If you are planning to race the car on weekends you should investigate other choices, but if you are NOT RACING, the 327/350 is hard to beat for pure driving pleasure, ease of maintenance and installation. My most unusual use of this cam: '62 'Vette which had been raced, removed drag racing cam, open plenum high rise and 1000 cfm carb, changed to '57 dual quad intake and 327/350 cam. Oh, and in the boats, I equipped the 327/350 with Rhoads lifters, which gave me a smooth 400 rpm idle, and 70 mph on open ocean.
