The top hinge on the driver side door of my 68 evidently needs to be changed. The metal piece which houses the two detent wheels is fractured and the door no longer holds open. I am told this is a tough job. Is there any way to avoid changing the entire hinge? Has anyone done this and any hints on how to approach it? Are there reference materials which show step by step procedures?

Re: 68 Door hinge replacement
Rick----
Unfortunately, the detent wheel is attached to an extension of the main body of the hinge. If this is cracked or broken, I'm afraid that there is little hope for an on-car repair. The only way that I could imagine a repair of the hinge would be to weld it, and I wouldn't recommend this being done while the hinge remains in the car. Besides possible colateral damage, it would be difficult to align and/or weld the part. And, once the hinge is off the car, it doesn't make sense to repair it.
The best step-by-step procedure for hinge removal that I know of can be found in the Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual. The 1970 edition(which includes 1969 Corvette)has the instructions on page 1B-18.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
