    Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes vs. ?

    Hello All,

We are looking into buying lacquer paint for our Silver Pearl 66 coupe while we know that we can. We spent quite a while talking with the local PPG dealer.

In talking with him, and in reading the Board over the years, we discussed the size of the metallic particles currently available in lacquer formulations. He admitted that a few locals have purchased paint from him to spot in their original paint cars from the 60's and 70's, and that the particle size didn't match. He said that they had to go to the Sherwin-Williams dealer to get the correct size paticle (and therefore appropriate paint) to match.

Does anyone know how good the Sherwin-Williams products are? Any experience with them? Or should we stick with the DuPont formula despite the differenced in metallic particle size? Any other thoughts?

The car hasn't even been stripped yet as we're working on the frame and mechanicals. We're just preparing for now.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

All paint formulations have been changed since those days, so there is no guarantee that Dupont is better than others with respect to color. Sherwin Williams is good paint. Sherwin Williams, Acme, Martin Senior(NAPA), are all the same product. I have actually, on occasion, had to try all three brands PPG.Dupont, and SW, in order to get a specific match. Sometimes any one brand may be closer than the other depending on the color.

        My Suggestion Would Be To...

try all four. I went through a similar experience about a year ago. Although not a metallic paint, I was choosing a 67 Sunfire Yellow, and wanted the best paint available with regard to not only hue, tone, etc., but durability. We purchased a test pint of PPG, Sherwin Williams, and R&M. Unfortunately we couldn't come up with enough material to make 3 gallons from Dupont. It seems they stopped making some ingredient of that particualar color.

Three 12 x 12 test panels were shot with said paints. There were slight differences in hue between all three. Fully intending to go with the PPG lacquer, we decided to "duplicate" a hot sunny summer day and see how well they held up. All three panels were put under a heat lamp for about an hour until they were very warm, but not too hot. For some reason the Sherwin Williams paint seemed to be the least affected by the heat. You could actuallly "dent" the PPG with your finger nail. Ever leaned against a car on a hot summer day? The paint can get pretty darn hot.

IMHO, it's well worth the time and effort to try a few different brands, you just might be surprised with the results.

        Good Luck,

All I can say is we used the Sherwin - Williams paint back in the 70s and guy's thought we were nuts. It was good stuff . I would use it again . BOB

As I have previously stated on this forum, PPG paints tend to be very soft and flexible. This is not necessarily a bad thing for the Corvette body. It may be a good thing. I have a car that was painted in PPG, then known as Ditzler, more than 20 years ago. It has held up very well. When it was first done you could stretch that paint film more than twice its length without pulling it apart. Now its hard as concrete.

dupont has formulas that have the correct metalic & should match as close as they did when the car was built .keep in mind some colors were hard to match even when the cars were new .

                Bill,

Some cars on new cars are hard to match, so there's no reason to think it was different then!

The car I sold this fall to my sister actually became "variant #1" for paint color in the PPG books for its year (PPG was the original supplier for the car). It was hit at 3 weeks of age, and the paint the shop used didn't match on the then-new car. PPG took the gas door off my car and came up with a match, calling it the first variant.

So DuPont also uses the smaller metallic particles like the "old days?" Do you have any idea who was original supplier for the Corvettes in 1966?

to the best of my knowledge dupont was the only paint used in St Louis . and yes dupont has a formula for your car in bc/cc or lacquer with the correct metalic.

Since Pierre and his family were (and still are) the largest shareholders of GM stock, their paints were in ALL GM plants in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

                      Re: Sherwin-Williams......... looks good

                      Pat,
I used Sherwin Williams on my pearl silver 67 SB coupe. The partical size was closest to the original paint we removed. Also the pigment was denser, seemed to have less clear percentage wise as in the original color. You will have to watch the pressure you spray at in setting the metallics depth. Higher pressures push the metalic deeper in the clear carrier. Too deep and it doesn't look original. I was very pleased in the finish, did a lot of rubbing out since no clear coat was laid down. You should be happy with Sherwin Williams.
