    Fuel Pump/Oil crossover?

For the past couple of years, my '64 has had horrible smelling exhaust - smoky when first started, would clear after a minute or two, but still stank to high heaven. Fuel pump also has always been the source of an oil leak. Well, I finally got around to changing the fuel pump. Just got rid of the leaks in the fuel lines and started it for the first time. No smoke in the exhaust! I thought the lubication and fuel were separated in a way that prevented them from ever coming into contact with each other, but now am thinking that the old pump was the problem. Anyone ever heard of a bad fuel pump as a source of oil in the fuel?

There's a diaphram and a couple of valves in the pump. If the diaphram cracks it can leak oil. Assuming your fuel pump is the original or old screw together type, take it apart and figure out how its designed and how it works. You can also rebuild it.

If it's the crimped type housing I suppose it's okay to go ahead and do a "destructive failure analysis" as the crimped type are not considered rebuildable.

I was involved in the manufacture of fuel pumps in the late 50's. The oil and gasoline were separated by an impregnated cloth diaphagm. In early failure mode, a small crack in the diaphragm would allow oil into the fuel line and the fuel pump would still function. At some point, the crack opens and the pump fails.
