Any mechanical fuel pump gurus out there? I've been trying to start my car for the first time since I started the restoration. To make a long story short, I have a rebuilt original AC fuel pump and have not been able to get fuel to the carb. I disconnected the incoming fuel line at the fuel pump, pressurized the fuel tank and had lots of fuel flowing out the line. I finally took the fuel pump off to check it out.
What I found is that the pump is working exactly opposite from what it should. When I manually operate it, I have suction at the "out" fitting and pressure at the "in" fitting. Both are clearly marked on the unit and it matches up with the fuel lines perfectly. The two valves inside do not appear to be interchangeable. How could this be happening.
One other thing, when I first received the pump, the bottom half of the unit was mounted in the wrong orientation so I had to change that in order to get the lines to fit correctly. That hints that whoever rebuilt the unit did not know exactly what they were doing.
