    Weird 60 Fuel Pump Problem

Any mechanical fuel pump gurus out there? I've been trying to start my car for the first time since I started the restoration. To make a long story short, I have a rebuilt original AC fuel pump and have not been able to get fuel to the carb. I disconnected the incoming fuel line at the fuel pump, pressurized the fuel tank and had lots of fuel flowing out the line. I finally took the fuel pump off to check it out.
What I found is that the pump is working exactly opposite from what it should. When I manually operate it, I have suction at the "out" fitting and pressure at the "in" fitting. Both are clearly marked on the unit and it matches up with the fuel lines perfectly. The two valves inside do not appear to be interchangeable. How could this be happening.
One other thing, when I first received the pump, the bottom half of the unit was mounted in the wrong orientation so I had to change that in order to get the lines to fit correctly. That hints that whoever rebuilt the unit did not know exactly what they were doing.

Never mind. I located the problem. The bozo that rebuilt the fuel pump reversed the valves by putting them in the wrong chambers. I changed them and now it seems to be working. At least I'm getting gas to the carb.

Dale, now I'm even more confused. It turns out that the fuel pump was rebuilt correctly based on some others I've studied but what baffles me are the markings on the fuel chamber casting. At the fitting on the carb side of the pump, casted into the housing is the word "in". At the supply side fitting, also casted into the housing is the word "out". That sounds backwards to me. I would think the fuel would enter from the tank to "in" and exit the pump at "out".

Attach the fuel supply to the "in" port on the pump. I think the two valves in the main body are in reversed holes. It's easy to press them out and interchange them.
