1966 Gas tank sending unit or guage problem

I have a newly restored 66 and my problem is with the gas tank sending unit I think. The sending unit is new but the gas guage is origional. Anyhow, when I fill the tank the guage needle registers full. After five minutes or so driving it registers approximately half full. I've put a coat hanger in the tank and gently pulled the sending unit arm up and it registers full. Letting go it drops to half again. Filling the tank again to full it registers full until I drive it for another five minutes and it goes back to half full. What's going on??? Do you think I have a ground problem? A sending unit or guage problem? If a ground problem which connections should I check out and how? Any help will be appreciated!!!

      Jerry:

Sounds like the float in the tank is porous and filling with fluid.
