Re: VIN numbers
Dave-----
The "8" in the VIN sequence is pretty strong evidence that the car was, at least originally, an L-48. However, there are many other things to check.
First of all, check the engine production code which is stamped on the same pad in front of the right cylinder head as the VIN derivative/ The production code will begin with the letter "V" followed by four numbers (for the month and day of assembly) and then followed by a 3 alpha character suffix code. This suffix code identifies what the engine is (or, at least, was originally). For an L-48 the 1979 suffix code will be ZAA, ZAB, ZAC, ZAD, ZAF, ZAH, or ZAJ. If it's an L-82 then the suffix code will be ZBA or ZBB.
Another thing which you can easily check is the harmonic balancer. The L-48 will have a 6" diameter balancer. The L-82 will have an 8" diameter balancer which is 1-11/16" wide.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
