What can I expect to have to "fix" to solve the problem of the transmission jumping out of 3rd (high) gear as I drive along ? Also, does anyone really know when the 56/57 3-speed tailshaft changed from #946 to #450 ?

Pat----
My guess on the "jumping out of gear" problem would be a worn transmission synchonizer assembly or blocking rings. The syncro assembly for your transmission was GM # 3774720 but was discontinued years ago, as far as I know.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 56/57 3-speed transmission
Pat, I'm not enough of an expert to know what you have to replace (3rd gear jumping out of gear under load). I have rebuilt several eons ago and recall they are pretty simple affairs. The gears are so cut to "force"into each other under load, so with your problem assuming the shifter did fully engaged the gears, something must really be worn! E-mail me privately if you need the e-mail address of a person who's currently rebuilding his '56 3-speed.
Here is what I found on tailshafts. This is information published in "The Restorer", Summer 1987 by P. Henricksen. '57 Corvette # 970 was known to have a non-dated 450 tailshaft. At that time he estimated the build date somewhere in January 1957. More recent information taken from Dennis Moore's "Birthday Book" would idicate that #970 was built during the 4th week in Nov. '56. I believe Nov. would be the more accurate date. I know of no late '56 Corvette 3-speeds with #450 tailshaft (doesn't mean there wasn't any). Hope this helps.- Top
