I am trying to keep the engine restoration of my L75 correct with the 3820000 oil pan and the matching front cover. My question is the external and internal baffle and tray, if used, on this combination. All of these early corvettes that we raced had the 340 HP or the fuel injected engines so I have no frame of reference. I am sure I have the parts, but the Z28 pan combination looks good to me. Please keep in mind that I am a racer, not a restorer, and bear with me for a while. Thanks a lot. TS

The 1963 L-75 with the GM #3820000 oil pan did not use an external baffle, at all. It used only the spot welded-in baffle which was supplied as part of the oil pan. This was a simple "plate" with a circular opening for the oil pick-up screen.
The "Z-28" oil pan (also used for 75-79 L-82), GM #465220 and currently GM #360450, does use an external baffle. This baffle is GM #3927136.
The GM #465220 (or 360450) oil pans can be used on your L-75. However, you must also use oil pick-up screen GM #3855152, upper dipstick tube GM #3876870, and dipstick GM #3951576.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1963 300hp oil pan
Joe and Don, I do have the correct 3820000 oil pan with the small seal radius. which brings up my next question. Assuming that I have the proper pan and an early front cover, timing tab removed as it was for the small diameter harmonic balancer, with the L75 balancer with straight up keyway/timing mark, what am I looking for in the way of a timing tab? I have spot welding equipment to duplicate factory attachment. Thanks for the quick response!! TS- Top

No bolt-on timing tab or welded-on type timing tab was ever available from GM for pre-69 applications. However, you can obtain a reproduction timing tab reproduced by Paragon. This does require spot-welding in the proper place on the cover. My understanding is that the current tabs available from Paragon are not correct in that the spot welded part of the tab is 180 degrees out (i.e. the tab goes "up" rather than "down"). I don't know if Paragon has corrected this or not.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Yes, the GM #3820001 or replacement GM #359942 oil pans will NOT fit a Corvette equipped with power steering (or steering dampner). However, the GM #465220 or 360450 pan will fit either application with no problem. They're not CORRECT for any pre-75 Corvette, though, and the external configuration of the pans is easily discernable as incorrect at a glance. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
