    427 Connecting Rods

I am in the process of collecting parts to build a 66 427/390hp engine for my 66 roadster. The original owner had the orginal motor rebuilt in the 70's and the machine shop did a block swap, among other things. (To find the original, I checked and the shop is no longer in business) I now have a correct casting # block, heads, intake, etc. I still need a crank and rod set. I found the attached set on eBay. Will these work for my engine? Are they correct for the 390hp? Any questions that I should ask the seller? Finally, the reserve was not met on this auction, what is a ball park fair value for these? Thanks - Joe

A set of brand new -0- cycle 7/16 rods PN 10198922 runs around $400.00. They wouldn't be correct for a hydraulic-cammed 427, but will work (I hear that NCRS judges may not have X-ray vision and probably can't see through cast iron) although they are a bit overkill.

      Jerry and Joe-----

Yes, the 10198922 rods are the ones that I would recommend for your application and they are an outstanding value. The original rods for your application, GM #3933174, were nowhere near this good, but these will work just fine for your application and, as Gerry says, no one will know the difference. Your original rods used 3/8" rod bolts and the 10198922 use 7/16" rod bolts.

        Addendum

By the way, the set of 8 of the 10198922 connecting rods is known as GM #12496661. This is the set that you can purchase for about $400.

By the way, to use the 7/16 rods in a '66 block, you will have to use aftermarket nuts that retain the 9/16 nut size to clear the block
