What would the proper temperature themostat be for summer driving of a 327 engine? Does the engine code (HT) suggest a higher temperature?? I noticed it is a little sluggish when the engine is cold.

Most folks use a 180. Occassionally, some will try a 160 in an effort to reduce operating temp. (This is usually not successful.) The HT (327/350) is no different from any other Chevy V8 as far as operating temp is concerned. -

180, all year long. Radiators determine operating temperature, not thermostats, unless the radiator has a good margin of heat rejection capacity and can cool the engine below the thermostat rating, in which case the thermostat cycles to maintain engine temperature at the thermostat rating point. If the radiator doesn't have adequate "margin", the thermostat just stays wide open and coolant temperature becomes solely a function of radiator heat rejection capability and the amount of airflow through it. The engine needs nominal temperatures between 180 and 200 for efficient combustion, and to allow the oil to heat up enough to boil off condensed moisture and acids in the pan.Comment
