    Yellow metal dye????

While working on my 68, I noticed some of the metal parts in the door (seal supports) are dyed a yellow color. It is not a paint, almost clear with some yellow color added. Are there any sources for this out there??? What is the "proper" material to use on a restoration??

    Thanks in advance. John

    John-----

The yellow (or gold as some folks call it) is a chromate bright dip which is used for additional protection over a base zinc or cadmium plate. Applying it is, basically, an electroplating process. Eastwood and others sell small-scale plating kits, but I don't think that they contain the bright dip chemicals.

The sodium or potassium dichromate used to produce the bright dip chemical solution is VERY toxic.

John, Try Caswell plating for both yellow chromate dip as well as olive drab chromate. The Chromate dip cannot be used by itself to renew the look of parts. The dip has to be used on FRESHLY zinc or cad plated parts, and forms a zinc or cadnium dichromate shell over the plating, which makes it more durable. When I say fresh, I mean still wet from the plating tank, rinse, and right into the chromate dip. If you attempt to use it on old plating that has already formed oxides on the surface, it will not work. Caswell's zinc plating system works well and gives great results after the learning curve is overcome. As Joe said the chromate is nasty stuff, so pay attention to the MSDS sheets and all instructions. John
