stall converters 4 a daily driver/ weekend warrior

One of the things I've never clearly understood about automatic transmissions was the stall converter. The way it's been explained to me, is it acts kind of like a clutch of sorts. Whatever 'stall speed' it's built as or set to, is when it will allow power conversion from engine to tranny and back to the wheels...

IE an 800 stall converter, would not allow forward movement until engine RPMs reach 800..is this correct?

Does anyone know what the stock 'stall' converter speed would be on a 77 th350?
and/or is there something out there like a switchable stall converter? one that could possibly have two settings, one for street use and the other for race/drag ???

    Thanks,
    Mike Engler

I suspect that this is the wrong place...

to ask this question. Try Corvetteforum.com. Most NCRS types are into perserving Vettes not tearing them up.

    P.S. Have fun!

Yes I suppose the last part of my post isn't a resto question, however I am still interested in what the stock stall converter would be on a 77 vette th350 auto trans...

        Try Kenne Bell

Buick used a "switch pitch" stall converter in the early '60s. This converter has two stall speeds. Kenne Bell has been selling those for a number of years, probably still does.

Go to www.kennebell.net. The website isn't much, you'll probably need to give them a call, there number is on the site. Da nada.
