72 Trans, Match the Motor ##??

I picked up a 72 car, and the trans says:

    C 72s497 S I think it's a "s"
    Hydromatic Yellow Tag
    72-CS-2597

The 68 car 4 speed trans is numbered to the motor, are the
72 cars numbered to the motors?

If so where should I look on the transmission??
    Driverside/Passengerside.
    What's a piece worth???

    Jeff-----

Yes, 1972s have the VIN derivative stamped on the transmission just like manual trans do. The VIN may be stamped in one of several locations. Usually, I think, it's on a boss toward the forward part of the trans. I don't recall which side, though, for an automatic. It should not be hard to find, though. Look on one side, then the other. However, it sounds to me like you may have already found it. Check the sequence that you describe as "C 72s497 S" to see if you haven't missed or mis-read numbers and letters.

      Jeff,

You are reading the sequence number off the tag on the passenger side. Nothing wrong there on what ou have posted. The real determinant of originality is the VIN derivative stamping. On TH 400 (M40) that is on the driver's side, right above the pan rail, where the shift lever is. You may have to move the rubber boot a little to see it, and of course the exhaust pipe will be in the way. It should be the same VIN derivative that is on your engine 72S5XXXXX.
