I need a little guidance on installation of the exhaust manifolds on my 56. The 56/57 AIM shows some thick washers installed between the manifold bolt and the manifold. I can't find any 1956 reference to a part number for these and I'm unsure if they were used. If they were, where in the order of installation were they placed on the bolts that retain the igntion shield "L" brackets? Although I have tapped out the holes in the heads to clean any crud out, the bolts bottom out prior to being tight if I don't use any washer/spacer. Also, won't the french lock be at an angle because of the extra thickness of the spacing on the bolts with the "L" bracket? Or isn't that a big deal? Thanks for any help anyone can provide

The thick special washers, called "spacers" in the A.I.M. (3/8" I.D. x 11/16" O.D. x 1/8" thick) are used only on the end pairs of bolts - none used on the two center bolts. These spacers always go against the manifold, with the french-lock under the bolt head. Where an ignition shield bracket is in the sandwich, it goes between the french-lock and the spacer. The latest edition '56-'57 TM&JG says the two center bolts had lock washers, but I personally believe that is in error - as far as I know, Chevrolet never used lock washers on any V-8 engine exhaust manifold bolts.- Top

Re: 56 exhaust manifold installation
John,
Thanks for the info. I agree with you, I've never seen regular lock washers on any exhaust manifold. I think I might put the spacers on the center as well just to ensure that the manifolds are held tightly - just to prevent hardware from bottoming out.- Top
