    Vinyl spray paint???

While flipping through Corvette Central's catalog today putting together an order, I came upon an ad for aerosol and cans of "vinyl paint". I must've cut that day of classes in school because I've never heard of this. Does this produce satisfactory results or is it just a stopgap measure until you can get the affected uphostery replaced? How long does it last? Is it just for touchup or would it be suitable for more extensive work?

    Thx,

    Michael

I would call it vinyl dye, but if it is the same basic thing , which I suspect it is, it should work nicely on most parts. I wouldnt use it on seats, there is just too much flexing. It will last indefinitely. Actually some parts on original cars were spray dyed. For example the metalic blues on the dash pads and door panels of some midyears.

I agree with Wayne. Dont use it on seats or any other area that would be under heavy use or flex. I just did a set of dash pads with really nice results. I used a product called "Sand Free" made by SEM. It is basically a primer and is said to open the pours in the vinyl to help the dye adhere better. I have tried it with and with out the Sand Free and I must say it does make a differance in the end results with.

I have used it successfully on seats. Don't know if it lasted forever, but it lasted the two or three years I owned the car.

There are dyes made specifically for this purpose. Typically, carpet is so cheap (relatively speaking) it may not be worth the effort unless you are just trying to take care of some spots. If you have black carpet, it might be worth a shot. Other colors....?????

The carpet is black. I might give it a try. Thanks.

The black may do ok. I tried some on a C4 with red carpet and the color didn't match all that well. It was just a couple of spots, so I guess overall it was satisfactory. C4 carpet is a lot more expensive, too.

It ususlly makes carpet hard and crusty. You may want to daub it with some Rit Dye or a similar product.

I agree with Wayne Womble, Vinyl spray doesn't work on carpet. I have a teal interior and used it to do my speaker grill and some other hard parts and it worked fine and was pleased with the match. I purchased it in a quart can and used a detail sprayer. I also airbrushed some areas on the seats which turned out good too. I bought it from ZIP Producsts.

                      Steve,
as your carpet is black use flat black spray paint on it. It does crust up a bit like Wayne said but a good vacuum a few days later will help that along a bit. It is not the end all be all but it does at least make it look better for a while. As mentioned above..carpet just is not that expensive. I would only do this on black carpet.

Brush it with a stiff brush prior to vacuuming.
