    Shock preferences....

What preferences do members have for shocks, gas charged or hydraulic?
    GM or aftermarket?
    Thanks,

    Re: Shock preferences....

I am looking for a GM shock that will cause the least deduction on Flight Judging. I very infrequently drive the car, so comfort or performance is not important. Thanks Jim Carmain

The selection of a type of shock should be based on the intended use of the car. Since you didn't give any details it's hard to make a recommendation. A NCRS judged car should have the correct shock per specs. A driver could have anything from normal hydraulic to gas, top brand to whatever. Driver types could be Delco, Monroe, Gaberial, Koni, KYB, and others. Gas shocks are less affected by temp changes i.e. hydraulic tend to ride rough in colder weather.Hope this helps!

Spax offers on-the-car rebound adjustable shocks. That way you can tune
the damping to your specific prefererences based on your driving conditions and roads. IMO adjustables are the only way to go.

Bob Riley was quoted as saying: "Ninety percent of setting up a [race] car is reading shocks", and in my experience that applies to any high performance car.

The Spax web site with online catalog and dealer listings is below.

          Koni's, anyone?

Anyone have any experience with the adjustable gas charged Konis available? I know they have a great racing heritage but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with these.

Hey John, why don't you pick up a set of Spax and let us know how they work out. I need some input on them vis-a-vis our Corvettes.

I have a set on my Cosworth Vega and these are the only shocks that could ever control rebound on the high rate springs. The previous HD Bilsteins had too much rebound in the rear and too little in front.

The CV shocks have 14 rebound positions, but the Spax shocks for our Corvettes might only have 10. The nice thing about Spax is that you can adjust them via a radial oriented screw at the base of the shock, so they don't have to come out of the car. Makes adjusting the shocks a snap.

You know Duke, those Spax just don't have as much cachet as the Konis. Seriously, if they have your approval, they must be good. I'll be visiting the Spax website soon.

                Thanks, Dennis.

You're right, what I was looking for was information on shock preferences for a driver with a fiberglass rear spring and stock front springs.

The information on the gas charged shocks vs hydraulic is much appreciated as is Duke's information on adjustables.

The adjustable gas shocks would seem to be the best choice for a driver.

                  Ah, The English

I think the last successful export the Brits sent to the US was The Rolling Stones. Spax doesn't have much marketing presence in the US - certainly no comparison to Koni or Bilstein, but their shocks are widely used in British club racing.

When they recently added an online catalog to their website I was surprised (and quite pleased) that they have an off the shelf product for our Corvettes. The CV shocks were done as a co-op program (25 sets) through our Club and Hutton Motor Engineering as they do not have an off-the-shelf H-body shock.

At $250 a set, I and everyone else who installed them on CVs considered the deal to be a steal.

                    Re: Ah, The English

The Viper production shocks from 1992-2000 were Konis, and the ACR (American Club Racer) option package used the fully-adjustable threaded aluminum body ride height-adjustable Koni race shocks ($1200 apiece). Koni technical support turned out to be less than stellar, however, and both the production and ACR race shocks were switched to DSI (Dynamic Suspension, from the U.K.) for the 2001 model year; the DSI race shocks used on the ACR are similar to the Koni race shocks, except they are easily adjusted on-car for both jounce and rebound and have auxiliary fluid reservoirs cast integral with the aluminum shock body. DSI is at least one U.K. supplier that knows what they're doing, supports the product in the field, and no, they don't leak
