    Hood Support

Hi, anyone have any tips on restoring the original appearance to a midyear hood support. I've got it cleaned-up, but it still looks very aged and weathered.
    Thanks

    Re: Hood Support

Hello Mario, I got a tip from Jack Humphrey for plated parts, to be fair. In my 70, which has a cad plated hood support, I cleaned it for just a few seconds (2,3 sec) in a 50/50 muriatic acid/water solution, then I flooded it in water and spray some WD40. It was two years ago or more and it still looks very good.

Don't know if it apply to your support, but it worked in mine.

Mario, Have you considered buying the Eastwood plating kit, it works well for small fasteners and brackets, it's inexpensive to buy and try. It doesn't give you a commercial grade plating but in my opinion its very close and will prevent rusting.

        Tip!

If you use Eastwood approach, the overall length of the hood prop will thwart your plating tank geometry. You CAN take 'em apart (two halves) to simplify the job of getting into an ordinary sized vessel.

If you send out to have replated, make sure you talk to the plater. Judges are going to be looking for the ATTWOOD emboss in the strut rod. Some plating houses will polish away and apply plate so thick, you can't see the original emboss anymore!

Is there any source of correct Attwood marked hood supports for a 65?

            Re: Tip!

I plated mine with the Eastwood kit. Got a piece of PVC pipe, a rubber pipe cap that plumbers use and a large hose clamp to hold it on, and in effect made a long skinny plating tank. Worked great.
