    Re: C1 Serial Number Tag

    Ted,

I'm no expert, especially on C1 S.N. tags. The 1st tag (yellow car) appears incorrect because no stamping machine would make such an impression to deform the tag & its reinforcing rib. That's just plain common sense. Ya, ya, I know, never say never. I just can't imagine an operator dropping a fat rag into the machine causing a tag to have a soft backup and be stamped with that deformity.

Re: Both of these are off of Pro-Teams site

Since when were the tags hit by hand? I know blocks were, and trannies were, starting in 61, but were the tags really hand stamped?

Dale, The second one is from the "matched" '58 / '08 pair of cars that sold at Barret Jackson. The '58 was a black / red interior big brake fuelie and the '08 was a loaded black / black and red interior Z06. By "matched" both cars had the same serial number. At first I wondered if the last digit on the '58 had been changed since the alignment appears slightly off. The last 9 fontwise appears to match the 9 in my serial number tag. The stamping appears very similar to mine.

Here's another one. The last 7 in this one looks crooked.

The tag on the yellow car looks exactly like the tag on SN 7175, distorted. I believe 7175 to be original.

The top one on the yellow car looks correct. I have seen a few exactly like this. I have a '58 in my garage with the original tag that looks similar, with the distortion on the lower edge.

I have to agree, when I compare my 58 tag to the pic of the yellow one above, you can see the similarities in the "wave" of the numbers from start to finish.
I too have the distortion along the bottom.

And I have to agree with Don and Bert as my '58 tag is identical to the top photo with the distortion at the bottom of the tag, starting just before the first number and ending just after the last number.
