    63 coil springs

Can somebody tell me if the coil springs on a Jan car,( standard suspension )should have markings on them, and if so ,what are the markings. Thanks Gary

There should be nothing on the spring, one marks, no labels, no tags, no stickers. The one mark is from the machine that held the coil in place as it was created. The mark resembles a small trapezoid and it's about 1/2 inch from one of the cut ends.

Do you have any other marks, letters or lines on the spring. Like a "P" or "d" with a line over or under it at the opposite end of the spring from the trapezoid?

        Harry,
the springs get no paint identifying marks, Like each coil having a paint mark.as far as the mark resembling a trapezoid. that's there. I also have on the opposite end I think it's the letter H I don't know what that is.but I'm more concerned about the paint for judging. Thanks Gary

Gary, FYI to help id your springs. I got this from Michael Hanson a few months back.

            Number of active coils..... 5.67
            Number of coils total....... 7.094
            Wire diameter................. .552"
            Outside dia. ................... 4.904"
            Height
            Free............................... 13.714"
            Total...............................15.147"
            Working.......................... 8.56" @ 1340

The "free height dimension" of 13.714" appears to be for the active coils only.

I don't think all 63 springs had tags. Pretty sure most assembly line springs used a paint color for ID.

The one color I did see was a swipe of lavender paint on each spring. It was about 1.5 inches wide. On one spring it was on every coil and on the other it was on the 3 center coils.

The only problem is I did not know if it was the Standard suspension spring or the Heavy Duty.

            Hopefully others will chime in.
