Duntov Award: 97% net score, or 97% raw score?

Hi everyone. On the NCRS homepage, under "Judging Awards" there is a "point system" section which says "Duntov/McLellan Award requires a 97% RAW score". (Emphasis mine)

Yet under the Duntov Award section it simply says that a car must obtain "a judging score" of 97%.

Well which is it? There is a difference, because on the judging sheets the "net score" is obtained by dividing the raw score by 45. Therefore, one could have a raw score that does not reach 97%, yet have a net score that does.

So, which is it? I have forwarded this question to the Judging Chairman, but I thought I'd get your thoughts as well.

    Thanks, Patrick Moresi #45581

Actually, the net score includes driving points which are excluded from the "Judging Score" Duntov/McLellen/Crossed Flags award calculation.

Hi Bill. According to the judging sheets, driving points are NOT included in the net score, but are included in the "grand total" score. Thus a net score could theoretically be a "judging score" under a Duntov Award.

Nevertheless, I think a friend just answered my question. Although there are 4510 points available, 10 of them come from bonus points for extinguisher, NCRS sticker and cut-off switch. I'm told that these 10 points are essentially "given" to the member, so both raw and net scores are divided by 4500, not 4510. Under this scenerio, raw scores and net scores are essentially the same.

Read the text of the NCRS Mark of Excellence Award in your copy of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual and it should clear up the 'confusion' regarding bonus points as they relate to mileage driven credits associated with conventional Flight judging scores....
