C3-1971 Calipers - New or Rebuild?

I submitted a question about my calipers leaking over the weekend. Joe Lucia and others provided input.

I noticed in the Technical Information Manual/Judging Guide the calipers are supposed to be gloss black. Are the numbers on the calipers judged? I didn't see anything but I want to make sure.

My calipers are original and I'm trying to decide if I should buy new ones and keep the originals for later since they are not seen. Any suggestions? What kind of cost am I looking at if I rebuild the originals versus buying new ones.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Greg,

I might call them closer to semi-gloss, but...

Anyway, if you're absolutely sure you've got the original calipers, you might as well send them away to be rebuilt and returned. If you do this through Vette Brakes, for example, it's $10 extra per caliper. Since they would otherwise charge you $10 extra per caliper to send you some in black, you might as well have them redo yours for the same $10 fee, getting yours back in return.

If you want black, there is no "down" side to just redoing yours, just the extra expense of doing that set later in life. Why pay twice?

The caliper numbers are usually inspected only in Bowtie judging.

And, when you have them redone, I highly recommend the O-ring pistons.

    I hope that helps.

Thanks Patrick....can you give me a ballpark on cost for having them rebuilt?

      Thanks again,
      Greg

Per their website, $449 for a set of 4 with the "extras" you may need.

They usually run "show specials" with significant discounts at any of the shows they attend. In addition your price will vary depending on what options you do or do not need.

On my 72 I did not replace any of the solid or rubber hoses since they were original and the car was on its way to Bowtie judging. The ones from VB are still in my basement.

Greg: If you are sure that your are originals, I would sleeve them and have the o-ring type pistions installed. I sent mine to Precision (see drive line ad). I didn't even have them painted. They did quick job and sent the originals back to me.
