    67 Steering Wheels

Has anyone seen the recently released 67-68 brown plastick steering wheels? If so what is your opinion on them? Thanks Keith

    Re: 67 Steering Wheels

    Keith,

    Who is making them?

I bought a GM authorized reproduction 16" wheel (from a Camaro parts house) for my '68, but the woodgrain is way too nice compared to my original wheel.

I haven't heard about these but I wonder if they make the unique wheel for 67 and also the correct wheel for 68. (two different parts) My neighbor could definitely use a new one for his 67.

Mike, are you sure that there's a difference between a '67 and '68 wheel? If so can you describe what it is? I've always thought they were the same.

Anthony, as I understand it America's Finest Corvettes out on the west coast is doing them. I think this is the same person that is doing the repro knock offs. Their email address is corvetteusa.com they have been running ads in the Driveline for some while. I was talking to someone a few days ago and they said they had seen one and it looked good but no details. This company is suppose to be doing the 64-66's along with the late 63's. Keith

            David-----

Although very similar in appearance, the 1967 and 1968 Corvette wheels were different. 1967 used wheel GM #9746195. 1968 used wheel GM #9748390. I vaguely recall that the difference might involve either a small difference in OD or a small difference in the offset of the wheel (i.e. the distance from the rim to the mounting flange).

The 1967 wheel was also used on all other 1967 Chevrolets which used a woodgrain wheel. I believe this included some Chevelles and/or Camaros. However, it was not used for any other GM cars.

The 1968 wheel was used for all 1968 Chevrolets with woodgrain wheel. I believe this also included Chevelles and/or Camaros. It was also used on some 1968 A-body Buicks and Oldsmobiles.

              David,

Yes, as Joe mentioned, the 67 and 68 are different part numbers and different wheels. If you look at an original 67, you'll see that the plastic rim of the wheel is/was somewhat textured. Although most of the texture has worn off most original 67 wheels, it usually remains in areas near the spokes.

              The 68 wheekls were smooth.

Okay Joe you and David have got this information out, who is going to pass out the dimensions of these two wheels? I have the 67 that I will say is more than likely the original wheel but all of the nice 68's are gone from the south. Help!!!!Keith

Mike, are you saying the 68 wheels never had grain/texture? Do you share thier thoughts about a difference in dimensions? Keith

It's very possible the dimensions are also different between the 67 and 68 but I've never looked or measured to compare.

I looked at an NOS 68 wheel many years ago and it had zero grain. All 64-66 and 67 wheels did have a grain. I had a new 67 wheel until a few years ago.

Mike, thanks for your response. I agree with the 64-67 description but have no real strong feelings about the 68. Joe says there is a part number difference then their is a difference in the wheels. If you run across a very nice 67 wheel let me know. Keith

believe the 67 chevelles were available with the optional wood grained, offset spoke, steering wheel(and ? identical to 67 Vettes).you might try some of the chevelle dealers.mike

                              Re: 67 Steering Wheels

Something that Joe mentioned that I wasn't aware of is the fact that the 9748390 68 wheel was also available on several other GM cars of that year. That would mean there were likely a LOT more 68 wheels made and sold than the 67 wheel.

Another reason why there may be a lot more 68 wheels floating around today is the fact that by June 1971, the original 9746195 67 wheel had been discontinued and replaced in service by the 9748390 68 wheel so someone ordering/purchasing what they thought was a correct 67 wheel from GM, actually received the 68 style wheel instead. In fact, a 1973 printing of the parts book shows that the 68 wheel also became the service replacement for all 63-68 Corvettes. (no mention of the fact that the 68 wheel wouldn't even fit properly on a 63-66 hub)
