69 water temp sensor...painted or not?

Was the coolant temp sensor on 68-69 427s installed before or after the engine was painted? If it was installed before paint would the hex end of it been "masked" or would the whole sensor have been painted?

    Thanks.

    Greg------

I don't know if the temp sender was installed before or after engine painting. However, it was not painted. So, either it was masked off in some way or it was installed after painting. I tend to think it was likely covered in some way.

One way to tell if it was painted or not....

If its called out in the AIM for your car, then it was most likely installed in St Louis (no paint). If it doesn't appear in the AIM then it could be as Joe said

The temp sender was installed at Tonawanda and masked off; the engine was painted before hot-test. The temp sender on small-blocks was installed at Flint V-8 and masked off - Flint engines were painted after hot-test.

          Thanks again guys!

Steve I was thinking like you were in that if it doesn't show it in the AIM then it was installed in Tonawanda...which is true. However just because a part was installed at the engine plant it doesn't necessarily mean that it got painted. An example would be the 427 exhaust manifolds. They don't show up in the AIM as a part to install because they were installed at the plant however they were not painted because they were installed after paint. I was wondering if the same was true for the temp sender but now I know that it should be partialy painted.
