    Bonding strips

Since I'm stuck with a one piece front clip on my mid year (unless I replace the whole clip with correct parts and repaint some or all of the car ) and lose originality judging points, can and should I consider adding the appropriate bonding strips to my car.

As they would serve no functional purpose, will I gain judging points ? As i read the Judging Manual a one piece front clip w/out bonding strips receive an 80% deduction while adding bonding strips would reduce the loss to 50% ?.

Lastly, is the addition a do it yourself project ? Attachement is accomplised by applying the correct adhesive and then painted as appropriate ? If it is a do it yourself project, it might make economical sense. Paying someone to do it will probably drive the cost skyward and the point value per dollar way down ?

Still looking for that elusive Top Flight and trying to figure out how to get there from low 90's .

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Bonding strips

installing bonding strips of a one piece front clip not too bad a job. you will have to cut the repo bonding strips(at front and rear of inner skirt to top surrond junctions)mike

      Noel,

Keep in mind that if you add bonding strips you will probably need to repaint. Bonding adhesive gets very hot when it 'kicks' while curing. It will most probably ruin the topcoat.

          Re: Bonding strips

stupid question on my part - what if I use something like liquird nails instead of the bonding adhesive ?

I don't want to make this a worse problem. Repaint ? - Don't even mention the word !

          Thanks,

          Noel

I remember real original C2's with original paint shows the front and rear bonding lines to main body section. Judges don't look for that anymore. Just asking!!

c-2 judges do look for shrinkage at the panels to bonding strip areas when judging the bowtie cars. stick to the 55's roy. mikie

                Re: Bonding strip pix

                Noel,
I have posted some pictures of the bonding strips on a reproduction 65 front end. If you go forward with the project, you can use these pix as a reference. There are 5 pix at the photobucket link. The first one is below.

                Good luck,
                Rob
