    Tank Sticker

Being new at this, where was the tank sticker located and how do I find it on a 1968 coupe, assuming it has one and is still there? Thanks for your help.

The tank sticker is found on the top, left (driver) side of the fuel tank. Usually, if present, it can be seen by opening the fuel door, pulling aside the rubber seal (boot), and looking to the left with the aid of a flashlight. You won't be able to actually read the sticker, but you can usually discern if it's there. The only way to actually access the sticker is to drop the fuel tank by following the removal procedure found in your Chevrolet Service Manual.

Tank stickers (which were actually just a copy of the car's "build sheet") were first applied to fuel tanks for the 1967 model year.

These documents are the most elusive for very late 69 (about August, 1969) through 1974 model Corvettes. That's because about August, 1969 Chevrolet added a pressure-vacuum valve to the top left surface of the fuel tank. Over time and inevitably, a small amount of fuel vapor and/or fuel which may pass the valve saturates and destroys the paper tank sticker and/or the adhesive used to affix it to the top of the tank. When the pressure-vacuum valve was added, Chevrolet should have moved the location of affixation of the tank sticker to the right side of the tank. But, they didn't.

And, to add to what Joe wrote, while the tank sticker is regarded as the Holy Grail in Corvette restoration, don't get your hopes up too high that you'll actually get anything. Even if it is there it is likely going to be unreadable. I retrieved mine a long while ago and time, the elements, and fuel vapors left me with nothing more than a very faint piece of dirty and crumbly old paper. Nothing was readable. I could barely discern that there had been some partitioning lines on the paper, but no readable text. Is it worth while going after it? Sure! Happy hunting.

Sometimes you can get lucky. A month or so ago, I went to look for the tank sticker on my 1967 roadster while I was replacing the rubber boot in the fueling area. With a flashlight, I could see it about 5" to the left of the fueling area. I completely removed the boot, the gas cap, and then the holder for the gas cap (about 10 screws). At this point, I could easily reach over to where it was. Being careful not to let anything fall into the gas, I gently started working at it with my fingers and managed to get in out in a couple of minutes with only one tear. The original glue was hardly holding it on any more. It was very dirty, but mild dusting with kleenex tissue managed to clean it off very well. Everything was very readable and luckily the tear was at the bottom, where there was no printed information. Good luck. Jim Hansen.

In 70 I am sure the tank stickers were on the drivers side, but 71 was different in that they were on the passenger side. I'm not familiar with 68, but is it possible that some or all during 68 were on the passenger side?

Joe - I agree with you about moving it to the right side, but, as far as the line was concerned it's job was complete when the car went out the door.....they didn't really envision restoration nuts like us caring!....my 74 sticker was readable by went to pieces (which I still have) when I removed. My 67 was in great shape, and I have it sealed in laminate. I saw an article in the current vette vues about certain vintages of 74's (I believe around serial 15000 or so) that had a problem with a thin walled fuel vapor return pipe in the tank, that was a safety recall requiring soldering a new pipe in the tank, and the flush process to make the operation safe would have more or less destroyed the sticker on any that had this action performed. Mine was #6823 so it didn't have this action done via recall....Craig

My 74 was on the drivers side....like my 67. Maybe it was just the luck of the draw he slapped it on!....Craig

Don't forget to look under the dash area! Can't say a midyear has one there but my 70 conv had the tank replaced before I got it but foud a nice build sheet under the dash between the tach and the speedo! I have heard stories of build sheets in the frame and under the carpet? Thad

Thank you all for helping me with the tank sticker hunt. "I FOUND IT" on the drivers side just about 4-5 inches from the rubber neck. It was loose, very dirty and fragile. I managed to retrieve most of the information, lost about 1/3 of the right side of the sticker. Dusted it off with Q-Tips and air and was surprised to see all the codes and options for the car. I now have it sealed in plastic and documented with the car VIN#, what a find. Thanks again, Glen

                        Hi everybody,

you can't imagine where I found my "tank sticker".

Doing a frame-off restauration I was able to take a closer look to the frame. Something I couldn't identify stuck in the frame just behind the steering gear. It was more than 90% of the tank sticker!

                        Greetings from Germany
