Re: ignition switch
Mike - There's a problem somewhere. What year switch are you working with? If you are working with a 68 or earlier switch, there should be a spring loaded brass pin in the switch at the front at the edge of the lock cylinder bore. New switch should be the same configuration as the old one. Pete- Top

Re: ignition switch
Mike - The spring-loaded "release" pin in the switch prevents the lock cylinder from going past the furthest designated counterclockwise position.
All the Delco-Remy in dash ignition switches I'm familiar with used in the mid-50s to 1968 on Corvettes and other GM cars have the spring-loaded brass "release" pin for the removing the lock cylinder, so if the "release" pin in the switch is missing or stuck down the lock cylinder will not stay in the switch.
Good luck.

Re: ignition switch
Michael,
You may want to check the area where you were working. It may have fallen out. Some switches had a removable brass button and spring. Some were kept in with a dimple in the housing(pictured repl switch). Did the switch come with a key tumbler? If not then yes the brass button and spring may be a separate item.
With the button there, it keeps the tumbler from turning past LOCK, unless you insert a paper clip in the tumbler hole, then turn CCW past LOCK with the key inserted. You can see a raised bump in the tumbler back on this one that was in our 63(wrong cuz it's a 2 hole faceplate, s/b 1 hole)
