    Visit to Detroit

    Hello All,
I am planning a business visit to Detroit and am wondering if there are any good GM tours, museums, or whatever, that I should look into while I have the chance. Any thoughts? Thanks

Be sure not to miss the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn.

Yes the Henry Ford Museum is not to be missed. uge and filled with gems including the original Kennedy assasination car, GT40 champion, many old GM, Ford and all other makes and yes a 54 Corvette is on display. A full original roadside diner and a recreated drive-in.

Nearly next door is a new automotive museum that I haven' been to but looks interesting. Everything is rather close to the airport as well.

        Enjoy!

          Dave,

I'm glad to hear you have an interest in exploring The Motor City's auto heritage. I was born and raised in the Detroit area and that's why I have the automobile in my soul. There are four attractions I enjoyed when I lived there. Other's have already mentioned the Henry Ford Museum. It does include one of the best antique automobile collections in the world - starting with the Model 'T'. But it contains so much more than that. For some reason as a kid I was fascinated with its large collection of steam engines of every conceivable type/purpose. The Automobile Hall if Fame is also located on this campus. Adjacent to the museum is Greenfield Village. This is a step back in time. It's been 20 years since I've been there but at that time they had a working blacksmith, glassworks and other craftsmen. Just down the street is the Thomas Edison House.

For plant tours, I enjoyed touring the Ford Rouge Factory and Ford Piquette Plant. The Rouge Plant was the only plant in the world where iron ore was unloaded from ships on the Rouge river and automobiles exited the other end of the plant - quite a manufacturing marvel in its day. The Mustang was built here until the 80's. The Piquette Plant is the birthplace of the Model 'T' and the assembly line.

If the Blue Oval isn't your cup of tea, you might want to visit GM World in the RenCen. There is usually about 30 GM cars on display and this would give an opportunity to see Detroit's most recognized icon - the 5 tower RenCen.

If you remember and still enjoy that Motown sound, I think the Motown Historical Museum (and Studio 'A') is still on Grand Blvd.

          Enjoy your stay in MoTown.

Among the attractions the Chrysler museum in Auburn Hills is great for car geeks, in the town of Ypsilanti just(15 miles?) west of the airport is a museum of the old Hudson dealer with artifacts from the GM plant that built the Corvair, the automatic Transmissions , Kaiser Frazer, and Tucker. Also R&M auctions has a showroom around the corner, (it's in Depot Town). You can go to a webiste www.ExperienceeverythingAutomotive.com that should describe all that's in Detroit. And don't forget to take a run up Woodward Avenue form 8 mile to Pontiac.
