    PV's most commen failures?

I am in the process of preparing my 65 Coupe for a PV. I have asked many questions to those who have been through it, and I have spent many hours with the "NCRS PV Test Guide". I have a couple of questions for the general membership who have been through it and to the judges..What (is)are the most commen failure(s) that occur during a PV? Are there some checks that are performed that are not covered in the Test Guide?

    Thanks,

    DP

The E-Brake and the way it is tested by your team leader can cause a failure. The hill that it was tested on was steeper than my test hill. It may be checked in other ways if their is no hill on the PV route. With an automatic if the idle is a little high the harder it is for the E-Brake to hold the car from moving if this test is used.

Check the function of the rear exhaust blower, read carefully the owners manual to operate it properly. Power Antenna, Light bulbs, check all, Cold Start, proper fast idle at initial startup is higher than you might think (reference service manual) Windshield wipers and washers, oh and one time I was PVing a car anf the owner had the vent window handle fall off the passengers door, make sure vent window mechanisms are tight and that THE HANDLE IS ATTACHED SECURLY!

From what I have seen: Vent window operation, Clock, Windshield washers, Fast idle Idle kick down nornal idle, Afetr road trip kicking out water but it can be anything? Thats why I think PV is by far the hardest but also the most fun and the most gratifying.

Regarding emergency brake testing....Someone told me that the judge checked the number of "clicks" and the brake had to hold with no more than 14 clicks.

Check your doors make sure there is no upward movement in the door when it is open. Grab the door at the end and check for play. It's not explained that way in the manual. I found out the hard way.

make sure the hood release handle returns to fully closed position after releasing the hood latchs. make sure the left and right seat adjustment tracks on each seat bottom are aligned perfectly. make sure the fan clutch isn't loose when one pushes the tips of the fan foreward and backwards. make sure the master cyl isn't seeping brake fluid on its lowest point or via the rubber boot inside the cockput. drive it about 500 miles and re-do yuour own PV multiple times. good luck. mike

With all the listed things to check and re-check to avoid a failed PV, it seems only a masochist would be interested. LOL

                  Dwight,

Never heard of the 14 click method ... sounds ambiguous to me. All the advice provided in posts above in this thread are very good. My PV judge tested emergency brakes on a very steep hill ... my '67 didn't hold, so I suggested an alternate test which he agreed would be an appropriate test and my car passed (after I tightened the cable's tension). Moral of this is to test and retest everything before your PV. Then, just relax and pass it FIRST time.

                  Good luck, Kent

                      Re: PV's most commen failures?

the most common failure is the human! not being prepared - not saying you are not, but these are 40-year old or older machines and things fail! hell, I had to put a new motor in my 2004 pickup at 30,000 miles because of oil pump failure

BTW - it took me the third try to pass, and I still believe the only reason I did finally pass is I drove my 1963 Z06 on the National Road Tour from Maryland to Boston last year

The best advise it to drive the car, not just around the block but drive the car. Take day trips, go to rod cruises, use everything on the car.

You accomplish several things, you learn how to operate everything, everything gets exercised and flaky items will fail so you can make them reliable. That is how you pass PV, everything works.

I drove my 63 twenty one miles total to check the spedo and trip odometer. I passed my PV in Vegas last year with one fix required... defroster to cabin heat cable not closing correctly(cable end not in heater box pivot lever. the best 15 min.I ever used wisely).
You may want to check free movement in the R&L hood hinges!!!! And the free drop of the hood to close and latch. The rear-end wine while backing up briskly. Straight ahead travle with no hands on stearing wheel(does not wander L or R at slow speed). Parking break hold on up hill and car does not move ---without your foot on the break to help!!! One last bit of insurance my buddy Mike Bogan and i did. We were asked about with a bit of laughter from the PV Judge (C.C.)What kind of gas are you using? Aviation 100 low lead, why? do you like how it preforms? Just a BIG smile from Carlton C.
