    Corvette block or not?

    Please help.

I pulled the engine out of my 64 and found the casting number to be 3782870 and the date code to be B224. The front pad has nothing at all stamped in it.

Is this a Corvette block? If it is, it might be the original block to my car. My car was manufacture in the third week of March, 1964. The timing seems correct for this to be possible. Any thoughts?

    Thank you
    Vince

It is a Chevrolet Block, used in Passenger car, Trucks, and Corvettes during the era your car was built. Without the Pad characters, everything else in conjecture. Possible, yes, but conjecture.

Thanks for responding. I had thought that if a date code was in the format of MDDY that it was Corvette. Whereas, a format of MDDYY was other than Corvette. Does that make any sense? Do I have it backwards or do I have no idea what I'm talking about?

Rebuilt and decked at one time? Can you see broach marks on the pad or milling marks?

You have the format correct. MDDY indicates a block from the Flint foundry which would be correct for Corvette applications. What Bill is saying is that is no guarantee it is your ORIGINAL block. Some other chevys may have used flint blocks too.

Surprisingly, no. It looks more like a few irregular scratch marks than a nice machined appearance.

all Corvette sbcs were flint castings and had the MDDY format. Some Chevy pass car sbcs were also cast in flint and had the MDDY format like the vettes. chevy pass car sbcs were also cast in tonowanda and they had the MDDYY format. however, no sbcs originally installed in corvettes were cast in tonowanda. mike

                Thank you.
I understand that it is a Corvette block. Is it original to my car, who knows?
I'll assume that it is just for me, and will never make any claim otherwise. My original question has been answered and I appreciate everyone who has offered some insight. You guys always are quick to repond with good info.

I'm certainly not an expert in this, but believe if it's original factory finish it'll have straight broach marks running parallel to the crank centerline. If it had been decked, most likely it would have curved marks nearly parallel with each other, like a disc sander would create, but not parallel with the crank. With the limited area exposed, it would probably be hard to tell.

Vince, as I have posted before on this board, my father who worked auto theft back in the '60s used to raise numbers from the pad when they had been ground off. IIRC they used hydrocloric (sp) acid
