C1 Interior Fan Switch- What's this?

The fan switch from the console on my 61 has a coiled wire assembly on the back. What is it? One end of the wire is riveted to the switch housing and the other end has a crescent shaped bracket that just hangs loose. I suspect that this bracket should be attached, but where. Thanks for your help.

The coiled wire allows for 2 fan speeds, like a rheostat on a light switch. It should not be haning loose, but mounted to the back of the switch.
