correct 57 oil pan is 57 corvette only. it is completely flat on the bottom around the drain plug. 58 up has a slight drop down around the plug so the plug would be the lowest point, makes since. the 57 passenger car pan is also flat on the bottom like the corvette but is different from the corvette pan. the easy way to tell them apart is the two indentions between the bottom stage and the second stage. they are at the outsides of the bottom. they are about an inch wide by three inches long and probably a half inch deep. this is a passenger car pan. they look like shrink marks when you bend a pipe. once you know what to look for its easy to tell them apart. you can also tell by the asking price. the 57 corvette pans are hard to come by so they bring a good price. most of the 57 corvette pans you see on ebay are passenger car pans. both pans will have the 3 verticle indention lines on the sides. all 3 lines are a different length. i probably have pics of mine if you want to see. just send me an email.

The GM #3769761 was first utilized for 1960 Corvettes with mechanical lifters. However, it could also be used for 1957-59.

The very first oil pan that GM ever cataloged for a 1957 Corvette was GM #3736615. However, I don't think that this was the pan used in PRODUCTION. I think that this 3736615 pan was one of the pans that had the fitting on the side used for some truck applications and was SERVICE-only for Corvettes. Later, GM limited it's cataloged applications to 1956 Corvette and the truck applications.

I can't find applications for either of these oil pan part numbers. They might have been PRODUCTION-only part numbers, though. GM #3735642, which is a part number close to the 3735640 you show, is applicable to most 56-57 Chevrolet passenger cars and some light trucks.

Is there a part number showing for this oil pan?

All the other prints seem to have part numbers on them, as do most GM prints. I wonder why this one does not. Without a part number, there's no way to tell what the pan's application is.

for what its worth... my tripple crown 57 corvette has the later 58 up pan on it. non of the 3 judging groups has ever docked me points for having a later pan on the car but ncrs and bloomington judges mentioned that it was a later pan. it is still on the car today. i bought a correct 57 pan buy later sold it on ebay for $350.00. the 58 pan i have on the car was a nos pan in perfect condition so i used it instead of the banged up 57 pan. the 2 pans are identical except the small area around the drain plug where it dropps about 1/4 inch.

Below is a photo of my '59's oil pan....which is comparable to M. Greene's description......I've been told it is correct. The car received the Triple Crown at Chicago last November.

that pan pictured is passenger car pan. probably from a 57 chevy. i see alot of 57 corvettes with that pan. you cant get better than tripple crown so i would not worry about it. however; the 58 up pans that would be correct for your car are not hard to come by and not much money.

also note the totally flat bottom on the pan. this was fixed in 58 so the plug was the lowest point in the pan. probably alot easier to get the old oil and junk out that way.

This discussion is very timely for me as I am searching for a pan for a late 56 with a 265. The bolt flange of the pans in the pictures being discussed seems to be what I need. I see on a past posting of yours in 2004 that you say that GM part#359937 is avaliable and will fit a 57-62. Will this fit my late 265? Is the part still avaliable now in 2008?
