Someone repainted the generator on my '62 and now I have some black paint on the tag. I am a little scared to try any thing to remove the black from the otherwise good tag. About 1/2 of the black has flaked off. Any ideas on how to strip the black and still preserve the red?

Re: Generator Tag
My experience with paint remover is that it typically only removes one layer of paint at a time (unless put on really thick). If you put some paint remover on a q-tip, and dabbed it on the black paint, it will likely lift it without hurting the red ink on your tag. Just be careful to keep the paint remover from directly contacting the red paint.
I have done this with success.

Re: Generator Tag
You've got me on that one. There is a paint remover for fiberglass, you could try that on a spot (put the paint remover on a rag and try to wipe off the paint in a spot). Fiberglass and some plastics share common characteristics.
Another option, is to try lacquer thinner on a rag and wipe on a spot. Just don't let a bunch of either (thinner or paint remover) to sit on the plastic and you will likely be okay.
No promises. Let me know how it goes.

Re: Generator Tag
Dave, Plastic W/S washer bottle should be no big deal. Just paint it with paint remover and wash the paint off. Then put the bottle in the dishwasher and it should be OK. I hear judges say that they like to see the old white bottles with the aged look. The creamy look. But I don't agree with them as that look should only appear on a bow tie. Not a top flight car.
As far as the tag. Good luck. John Pirkle has the best tags and they are cheap. He's in the Driveline. Use your old rivets over. John D.- Top
