The tach cover on the 4007 airbox car is sheet metal with a vinyl like cover. It also is sort of a figure eight shape (large dia. around the tach, small dia. around the steering column) clamps under the steering column with I believe 3 screws along the bottom flange.
The one on the SR2 looks like a different shape? Possibly a molded piece.

              Re: SR2...Special tach cover

Is the one on 4007 like the on eon the Earl car or the one on the Mitchell car. I know very little about these cars other than what I have been reading. I have ben caught up in the controversy of the 4007 fairing. If it's like the Earl car or even the Mitchell car, it would be initeresting to see what NCRS judges deem it.

                Re: SR2...Special tach cover

If I remember correctly it I was told it is like the one on the Harley Earl car.
Supposedly there is a GM print for the part and only 2 were made.

This 50+ year old info needs to be documented for the future before it is lost.

Ken Kayser has put much of the info on the 4007 car in his book which I have found very informative. I live in Middletown Ohio where the car lived after it was delivered.

                  Re: SR2...Special tach cover

The tach fairing on the Bill Mitchell SR2 is molded as I recall...and from the picture on Doc's post the Jerry Earl SR2 tach fairing looks to be the same or very similar to the Bill Mitchell car. Bill Tower and Rich Mason would know for sure as owners of these cars. Bill will be at the Kissimmee show next week.

The SR2's are production cars that were customized in the Styling department..so they are in a different category from a standard St.louis plant production car.

Re: Bill Mitchell SR2 also has a special tach cove

In any case, it was short-lived; by the time the car went to Nassau in December 1956, the tach was out on the hood, ala late 60's Pontiac Firebirds, etc.
