C1 '58 Oil Slinger and Spacer

While swapping my timing cover and oil pan I noticed that neither of these are in place on my '58. It has a double roller timing set installed. I realize the spacer is to compensate for the engine mounting bracket. I assume the crankshaft sprocket on the timing set is wider than original to allow for the double roller timing chain. Do I need both the oil slinger and the spacer, just the spacer, or neither of these? Thanks, Ted

    Ted-----

I can't comment on the spacer or slinger. However, the width of the timing sprocket should be 0.535", regardless of whether it's stock or any double roller that I'm aware of. It's possible that there may be some "race-only" type double roller sets out there with a thicker sprocket, but I've not seen one. If there are such pieces, I doubt they would fit under a stock-type timing cover.

By the way, the width of the TEETH on small block stock timing sprockets changed for the 1967 model year and thereafter. 1955-66 have wider teeth than 67+. However, the width of the sprocket's snout orifice was maintained at 0.535".

I will comment only on the spacer...

...given the 1/8" thickness of the front cross mount - and given all OEM correct pulleys and correct harmonic balancer, you will need that 1/8" spacer to retain correct pulley & belt alignment.

And I'll comment on the slinger...

Our shop experience is the slinger serves a 'cosmetic' function IF you have a solid seal at the front shaft as it passes through the timing cover. With a speedo sleeve to absorb prior shaft wear and a good/new seal, the slinger isn't needed. But, all bets are off if these two conditions aren't met...
